American Airlines Decides to Phase Out 757

American Airlines has published a statement on its decision to phase out all of its 757 fleet by the end of 2021. The airlines, one of the largest existing operator of the fleet has been eyeing for replacement of its 757 aircrafts with newer more fuel efficient fleet like the A321 LR.

Currently, American Airlines operates 20 B757s with average fleet age of 17 years.

As reported, the phase out shall commence as early as May 2020 and shall be staged till the end of 2021.

The decision comes at a time where most of the airlines are grounding their aircraft as result of travel ban across the world resulting from the COVID-19, pandemic. With demand for tickets at the lowest, grounding a non fuel efficient aircraft may prove to be a smart move for the airlines. It will provide ample time for the airlines to prepare a replacement plan based on the market requirements.

How practical is the move? Time shall only tell.
